Marseille has been elected as European Capital of Culture for 2013 and is one of the major future business hubs of a changing world
The 2 600 years old city of Marseilles welcomes you. Founded 2600 years ago, Marseilles is one of the fastest changing cities in Europe. While retaining its distinct cosmopolitan Mediterranean identity, the city has become a major logistics centre for air, sea & rail transport and the location of numerous world leaders in dynamic businesses (smart cards, chips, helicopters, petroleum, cosmetics…).
Nestled between the mountains and the sea, Marseille is a combination of a rich and unique heritage, a variety of intense cultural activity and an exceptional setting - its bay and its famous Calanques, envied by the world. The increasing numbers of cruise passengers who visit Marseille and its world-famous region are enchanted by the islands dotted around its spectacular harbour.
Marseille is also poised to become the capital of the Euro Mediterranean Union promoted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to bring the countries around the Mediterranean much closer to the European Union.
