MSc IN MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME GRANDE ECOLE

Presentation:

Who can tell today what tomorrow's world will be like?

Is it reasonable to design educational programmes based on a single approach , albeit tried and tested, focused on the balance of power and immediate results? Is the objective of a "Grande Ecole" not to widen the scope of possibilities, in preparing its students for success in an ever-changing environment. This was the original idea in the creation of Euromed Management. A pedagogy based on action and experimentation rather than abstraction, on diversity rather than uniformity, on pragmatism and individual rather than on doctrines.

Euromed Management is an important player within the European metropolis, in the heart of an economic region that is rich in potential, cultures and diversity. With us, you will learn to create your future among other individuals, and to welcome change as a source of opportunities. To see and to show the world differently, such is our ambition. To prepare you to embrace the potential of a future that is as yet, by definition, unknown.

To create reasons for optimism, by helping you develop the ability to take action and make the right decisions. To train those who will endeavour to build a better world. To teach management as if it were a lifestyle.

Euromed Management relies first and foremost on the approach developed by its pedagogical team. Our intention is to share this project with you; in order for you to become men and women of action, change and success.

An international Challenge

We have chosen to position Euromed Management as a major Euro-Mediterranean Management School. The School is also part of a network partner universities and schools in differents countries. Together with these partners, we offer opportunities for high standard double-degrees. Here is what your CV will say when you leave Euromed Management: bilingual Manager (French/English), trained to operate in multi-cultural environments, with significant international experience. At Euromed Management, students learn to become operational internationality by "being" international.

They learn to "live international", by adapting to our different partner universities. By thinking, sharing, studing and living among citizens of the world. Through their involment in an environment wich offers constant exchanges and communication. With the professors, students and companies in other countries, students acquire an openminded approach to the world. This offers an opportunity to trade places, and gives, in a way, a window to a different world with different thought patterns, different points of view concerning the same issues.

Here students are trained in nomadic management, free of borders.

Objectives:

ESC Business School: Teaching Concepts

Management is, in the majority of cases, based on rigorous approaches, but businesses excel when their managers show themselves to be capable of making a difference. The art of management lies therefore in the close relationship between the manger’s personality and his leadership qualities. A manager must be able to enrich his existing knowledge through his capacity for lateral thinking and for motivating his personnel. Above all, a manager that remains "himself" is a manager that will make a difference.
It is this combination of scientific rigour and personal development that makes the backbone of our ESC programme.

Management development and teaching are part of a “four-dimensional” phenomenon.

The future manager must acquire the valuable knowledge – management theory – expressed in the very concepts of management. The manager must also be aware of how these concepts are applied in real situations. Case studies and examples are used to demonstrate this aspect.

To this effect, the difference is made through the acquisition of the skills required in management which will make it possible for managers to not only understand how these concepts are applied but to apply them himself.

This set of management skills is acquired via activities and projects. This is where the Euromed’s Pro-Act method comes in that it implements in its Management School.

Finally, personal development in management provides another essential dimension: “If I can be a future manager capable of thinking and acting differently, then my behaviour will also be different”.

Personal development is everywhere or nowhere. It cannot be taught, it must be lived.

During the Bachelor year, particular attention is brought to bear on personal development tools to enable students to continue to develop during their Masters course. This vision can only materialise if a wide range of choices is available to the student for choosing his own path. He must be able to develop into that which he truly wishes to become.

It is this management vision that we have transformed into a specific teaching approach and programme.

The Euromed Management School’s detailed programme derives from the School’s vision of what is excellent management and from the exclusive value that Euromed Management and the Marseille region have to offer. Without going too far into detail (you will find more information in the site), it is interesting to summarize the key aspects of this vision, especially as this same vision is part of our research agenda.

This vision, which shows through in our research projects, is found systematically in the programme, mainly in the elective modules but also partially in the basic modules.

The key concepts behind our vision are:

  • Euro-Mediterranean management.
  • Sustainable development.
  • Diversity
  • Small businesses and regional practices
  • Innovation, entre(intra)preneurship, knowledge
  • Transversality and systemic management.

This vision, the research programme and the teaching concept are all included in the School’s global offer.

The diagram below combines the three dimensions of the teaching concept described above (especially as personal development is an integral part of the student’s personal study agenda): concepts, cases and tools, along with the School’s research programmes (all stemming from the School’s vision).

In terms of concepts, six basic modules exist that are to be followed by all students on the ESC programme (in English and French).

The grid below crosses the fundamental management concepts with the “application” part of the teaching concept, as part of the research agenda.

The grid shows the elective modules offered to the student by the School. On the basis of his own study path, the student can select the subjects he is interested in most. The third dimension of the diagram represents the skills part of the teaching concept and its integration in the Pro-Act approach.

At the end of the general Masters course, the student can choose to specialise:

  • Either in a specific professional profile
  • Or in a specific professional sector.

We have created gateways to our specialised Masters course which mean that the student does not have to relearn the management basics. He can directly specialise in a given profession.

Through our innovative teaching approach, we are certain to offer you a “leading edge” programme concept.

Euromed Management’s vision, through its application to a specific programme, offers the student a unique opportunity and added value that exceeds market standards.

(For more details on the teaching concept please refer to the following works: Walter Baets and Gert Van der Linden,The Hybrid Business School: developing knowledge management through management learning, Prentice Hall, 2000; and Walter Baets and Gert Van der Linden, Virtual Corporate Universities: A matrix of knowledge and learning for the New Digital Dawn, Kluwer Academic, 2003 )

Programme

Customized courses:

In a world of perpetual change, companies are seeking to recruit multi-skilled executives with a transversal corporate vision. To acquire knowledge of all sectors, Euromed Management proposes a general programme.

The teaching approach provides the student with a flexible and individual study course which will make it possible for him to select the classes, work rhythm and schedule that suit him best. A second specialised Masters will enrich your additional modules curriculum.

At last, the ESC Grande Ecole programme can be taught in English and adapted to foreigner students: see details of the MSc in Management programme.

1st year: Bachelor year

The purpose of this first year is to understand management concepts and techniques. Through "In-company assignments" you will learn to master the basics of management.

  • Principle: in a team of 3 to 4 people, supervised by a tutor, you will discover a Company as a whole system.
  • Assignment: you will undertake external and internal investigations and you will propose a diagnosis of the company’s capacity for development.
  • Supervision: a tutor is available to assist you throughout your course and is there to encourage you in your questioning, to validate your thought process and to discuss the work you have already completed.

This experience is an exceptional way of getting to know yourself and to this effect to learn how to manage and adapt your course of action.

2nd and 3rd year: Master of Science in Management.

Through this programme you will follow what is known as the basic classes. You will undertake 3 Pro-Acts (International - Research - Employment); organise your studies at your own pace, according to your projects and following opportunities arising during the course. A hundred or so elective modules are available.

Pro-Act: a teaching approach for developing students’ skills.
Pro-Act, an innovative learning concept, establishes the link between the student’s education, his future career and the requirements of recruiting companies.

This entails:

  • Customized classes,
  • Increasingly interactive teaching methods, oriented towards concrete actions.

With the Pro-Act approach, Euromed Management’s teaching method re-establishes the balance between:

  • The tutors’ academic skills, essential in mastering management basics, analysis, reflection and the acquisition of reflexes granting access to strategic corporate positions,
  • The need for permanent experimentation, for which the demand is high in the business world, enabling students to develop qualities that really make a difference in their future posting.

It is the student that decides the rate at which his PROjects-ACTions are designed and implemented following discussion with his team.

Each student must, throughout his studies, validate 6 Pro-Acts including:

  • 1 "Employment Pro-Act",
  • 1 "International Pro-Act",
  • 1 "Language Pro-Act,
  • 1 "Research Pro-Act",
  • 2 "Elective Pro-Acts ".

Career opportunities:

Employability

An innovative teaching method which meets the expectations of companies.

Euromed Management has innovated by making personal and professional development a major focus point of its teaching method.

  • The Metizo teaching method: The Metizo personal development certificate is an innovation and guarantees that the student has identified their professional goals and carried out an analysis of their long-term personal priorities and aspirations, has defined the skills necessary to ensure the success of their projects and has become familiar with the personal development tools used in business.
  • The Pro-Acts teaching method : its aims are to teach how to take the initiative, work as a team, manage a project from start to finish, be creative, independent, adapt to others and different situations, to be self-confident and have confidence in others and create professional relationships.
  • Pro-Act Job Teaching method: The coaches of 'Path', Euromed Management Career Centre, support students in their employability, especially by creating and implementing their professional projects. At the end of the course, students present their Pro-act job at an oral examination in front of a panel made up of Human Resources professionals. The aim is to make an employability diagnosis taking into account their studies at Euromed Management and the professional project they have created. For companies, it is also an opportunity for them to discover new potential.

Personal account

"The ‘Française des Jeux’ is present in the Bouches du Rhône departement with a site of 250 staff. Frequently recruiting graduates from Business Schools, we have a close relationship with fifteen Business Schools which require a competitive entrance exam.
The METIZO teaching innovation and the ‘pro-act job' process are, for me, very efficient tools in getting EUROMED Marseille graduates into the best jobs. I have seen the developments over 4 years : today, they are among the most interesting students that I meet in the Business Schools: their projects are well thought-out, their choices lead to high performance internships, they are ambitious, have the means and are operational."
